The Evolution of Sports Broadcasting: From Traditional TV to OTT Platforms

Sports broadcasting has undergone rapid change over the past several decades. While terrestrial broadcasting and cable channels were once the primary sources of sports coverage, internet-based OTT (Over The Top) platforms have recently emerged as a new alternative.

Traditional TV broadcasts have delivered vibrant, action-packed games to viewers through high-definition video and expert commentary. Terrestrial broadcasters like KBS, MBC, and SBS have captured national attention by broadcasting major international competitions like the Olympics and World Cup, while dedicated sports channels have secured a fan base by offering a wide range of sports.

However, with the proliferation of smartphones and the internet, viewing patterns have changed, leading to rapid growth in OTT platforms. Not only global platforms like Netflix and Disney Plus, but also domestic platforms are securing sports content. These platforms offer the convenience of watching the game whenever and wherever you want, along with differentiated features such as a variety of camera angles, instant replay of highlights, and real-time statistical data.

Younger generations, in particular, prefer to watch games on their mobile devices whenever they want, rather than sitting in front of the TV at a set time. In response to this trend, sports leagues and clubs are launching their own OTT services or partnering with existing platforms. Immersive broadcasts utilizing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies are also expected to emerge in the future, and sports broadcasting will continue to evolve.
